Former Super Eagles coach, Austine Eguavoen, began his reign as Sunshine Stars gaffer with a 2-0 win over champions, Rangers International, in a rescheduled match played at the Akure Township Stadium on Sunday Evening.

Eguavoen was appointed coach of the Akure Arsenal last week following a wobbling start to the season under former coach, Kayode Olujunyingbe.

Sunshine looked renewed in the match and dominated early proceedings, but it was the visitors that issued the first real threat of the game when Ifeanyi George’s lob over keeper Henry Ayodele failed to hit target.

The hosts, however, recovered and found the back of the net, but Ajibola Otegbeye’s effort was rightly ruled offside

After a scoreless first half, Sunshine continued their dominance and where duly rewarded in the 57th minute when the referee pointed to the spot after Osas Okoro was adjudged to have handled the ball in the box. Otegbeye fired home from the resultant kick to put the hosts in the lead.

Rangers introduced Obinna Nwobodo for Daniel Etor, but to no avail as Sunshine doubled their lead in the 77th minute with a quick counterattacking move that resulted to Alaba Adeniyi’s goal.

Rangers, in the quest for a comeback threatened late on, but Eguavoen’s men held on for a well-deserved win.

The win gives the Akure Arsenal a massive leap on the table as they now sit 14th with twenty-four points from nineteen matches.

Rangers, on the other hand, remain just one spot above the bottom with 19 points from 17 matches.

Elsewhere, Nasarawa United defeated Rivers United 1-0 to return to the upper half of the NPFL log. The game’s only goal was scored by Adamu Hassan in the first half.
