Failure to turn on the floodlights at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo ensured the Super Eagles practice match against Akwa United did not last more than sixty five minutes.
A similar scenario occurred a day earlier as the Eagles tried to have their first ever training session under the German coach, Gernot Rohr.
With the 2nd half of the encounter against Akwa United about 15 minutes gone, the fans became restive because it was getting dark and the floodlights were yet to go on.
And with the second half twenty minutes gone with no hopes of the light going on, Emmanuel Ikpeme of the Nigeria Football Federation walked to the 4th official and motioned to him to raise the board for 2 minutes added time and after that the referee ended the game with the Eagles 3-0 up.
“I hope this won’t happen on Saturday when we play against Tanzania and we can have the lights on,” Gernot Rohr told Naijafootball247.com after the encounter.
“You couldn’t have judged my team from the little time we played in the 2nd half because it was dark and we couldn’t get the lights on,” Rohr said.
But asides the disappointment of the floodlights, fans at the Stadium enjoyed the game as it was good to see their favourite players strut their stuff against the home team.
The Eagles started with Ikechukwu Ezenwa in goal, Musa Mohammed Nnamdi Awazien, Jamiu Alimi and Elderson Echiejile in defence.
The midfield had Wilfred Ndudi, Nosa Igiebor and Shehu Abdulahi while Victor Osimhen, Brown Ideye and Ezekiel Imoh played upfront.
After a couple of misses, Brown Ideye put the Eagles ahead when he tapped in from close range and then Nosa Igiebor made it 2-0 late in the first half.
At the start of the second half, Gernot Rohr replaced Ezenwa with Emmanuel and also threw in Leon Balogun, William Troost Ekong, John Mikel Obi, Ogenyi Onazi and Odion Ighalo but the new group did not have enough time to enjoy their game before it was stopped in the 65th minute.
However, there was enough time for Elderson Echiejile to get sent off for a second bookable offence and Odion Ighalo to score the 3rd goal from the penalty spot.
Incidentally, the Super Eagles training on Tuesday did not last more than 25 minutes as darkness engulfed the stadium causing Rohr to end the session unceremoniously.
A source at the stadium told Naijafootball247.com that they were not informed the Eagles would train hence no provision was made for lighting.
