Kelechi Iheanacho will not play in 2016 Olympics

Kelechi Iheanacho will not participate in the men’s football event of the 2016 Rio Olympic Games following Manchester City’s refusal to releasing to the player to Nigeria.

The 19 years old was invited to join the Dream Team VI squad for the Olympics but he would rather remain at City, as he will focus on forcing his way into incoming coach Pep Guardiola’s team.

However, City were under no obligation to release the Nigerian, and with Guardiola taking charge of the team on July 1, he has requested that every available player should take part in the pre-season.

Manchester City are understood to have spoken extensively with Kelechi Iheanacho who is on holidays in Nigeria.

He had wanted to represent his country in Brazil, but he is fully aware of the importance of being in the squad from the start, as he hopes to prove his worth to Guardiola.
