Onazi says friendlies will help Super Eagles

Super Eagles midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi says the squad's upcoming friendlies against Mali and Luxembourg will provide the players an opportunity to bond ahead of the 2018 World Cup qualifiers which recommences later in the year.

The Super Eagles play Mali’s Les Aiglons in Rouen, France on Friday, 27th May before engaging the National Team of Luxembourg on the 31st of May.

Onazi who is still pained by the Super Eagles failure to qualify for the African Nations cup says the upcoming friendly games would help the Eagles correct all that had gone wrong with the team.

“My wedding is coming up in June so I would play the game before my wedding comes up. It is very sad when i think that we are not going to the Nations Cup.

“I think we are just going for this friendly games for us to bond and make sure we try to have a team so that when we want to play the qualifiers for the World Cup we don't have such mistakes.

“I believe so many things have gone wrong and it is time for us to correct those things,” Onazi told Naijafootball247.com.

Stand in captain, no pressure

With John Obi Mikel and Ahmed Musa missing the friendlies owing to their honouring the Joseph Yobo testimonial, Onazi is expected to captain the Eagles against Mali and Luxembourg.

Onazi says such responsibility does not put him under any pressure.

“For you to be appointed captain or care taker captain for any association or a group of people, it shows responsibility and they have seen that you are capable of assuming such responsibility.

“It is something that you need to do with wisdom. You have to be calm and make sure that you do things the right way that is why you have been selected.

“For me it’s no pressure because it is something that you need to understand what it means. First of all understand the position they've given to you before you can be able to react to such a position.

“For me it is something normal, it doesn't give me any pressure rather it will make me work harder.”

Happy to have Ideye back

Onazi also shared his excitement at having his former roommate Brown Ideye return to the national team.

“We have had so many of our players who are coming back with whom we won the nations cup who are going to fortify the team for us like my friend here Brown Ideye .

“I am so so excited that he is back because he is my roommate and I have not had a roommate like him. I am super excited to having him back,” Onazi said.
