Heartland fire Orji, hire Alphonsus

Bethel Orji

Heartland have announced the sack of Bethel Orji as manager of the club following a shaky start to the season that saw them fail to score in any of their three opening games.

The announcement came shortly after he led Heartland to 0-1 home loss to Abia Warriors on Sunday, making him the first managerial casualty of the season.

Orji was elevated to head coach last season following the sack of Erasmus Onu in a similar scenario, and guided the team to a seventh place finish on the log.

However, the new season did not start off well for the Naze millionaires who opened their campaign with a barren draw against Warri Wolves, before securing identical result at Wikki Tourists in mid-week. All the same, the weekend’s loss at home to Abia Warriors proved to be Orji’s last in charge.

According to the club’s official twitter handle, the vacancy will be taken by former Golden Eaglets coach, Alphonsus Dike, who previously had stints at the Owerri based outfit.

The first task for the experienced gaffer will be a trip to the mammoth God’swill Akpabio stadium where Heartland will face Akwa United in an NPFL week four fixture.
