Baba Ganaru targets league NPFL title with Pillars

By Emeka Dennar

Technical Adviser of Kano Pillars Mohammed Babaganaru has stated it in clear terms that his target is to reclaim the league title ahead of the upcoming Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season.

Pillars won the NPFL title three seasons (2012, 2013 and 2014) in a row before Enyimba claimed the league shield last season.

In a chat with naijafootball247.com in Ijebu Ode; where Kano Pillars recently won the Gold Cup pre-season tourney, the former Nasarawa United coach says the Sai Masugida as Pillars are fondly called, have what it takes to recapture the title.

“The target we set for ourselves this season (2015/16) is to win the trophy,” the soft spoken manager said.

“We are not targeting any second or third position finish. Our set objective for this season is to regain the trophy; to win the league.

“We have every support from the government. If we don’t have the support, we will not be able to be away from Kano for about three weeks. We were in Kaduna for about ten days and we are now here (Ijebu Ode) for about 10 days. It is not easy to carry the whole team away from Kano for 20 days.

“I think the management did a very good job for us,” Babaganaru disclosed.

Recalls ‘painful’ loss to Nasarawa last season

The four-time league champions endured a difficult 2014/15 NPFL season finishing 8th on the log and outside the top 2 for the first time in 4 years.

Last season also saw Kano Pillars lose their 12-year old unbeaten run at home when Nasarawa United handed them a 2-1 defeat on 23 August, 2015.

Babaganaru who described the result as painful says it is still fresh in his memory.

“It was very painful. It still remains fresh in my mind,” the Pillars manager stated.

“No matter how long the record stays, one day it must be broken. The only painful thing is that it happened in my own time.

“I tell you it is very fresh in my mind. I still have it in there. I am just waiting for the new season to start,” Ganaru regretted.

The four-time league champions will open their campaign in the 2015/16 season with a home tie against Rangers International of Enugu on Sunday, 21 February, 2016 at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.
