Kukuruku Dragons start Nigeria Federation Cup race

Qualifier from Edo State, Kukuruku Dragons FC will start their Nigeria Federation Cup race on Tuesday in Lokoja as they try to emulate other rookie teams of the past.

Kukuruku Dragons lost to BJ Foundation in the Edo State final and start their Federation Cup challenge against God’s Time FC of Delta State in Lokoja on Tuesday at 4pm in a winner takes all encounter.

Their conquerors in Edo State, BJ Foundation FC have drawn bye to the round of 64.

Kurmi Market of Kano will play against AA Stars of Sokoto while the Black Cats of Cross Rivers State will tackle Inter FC of Enugu.

In Aba, it will be Mgbo Ambassadors of Ebonyi against Pilo FC of Imo State while the Peacemakers FC of Ondo State will lock horns with Nath Boys of Lagos.

Arugo Babes in 1998 was a non-league side that had the likes of Chijioke Ejiogu, Obinna Nnodim, Friday Onyeukwu amongst others who led them to the semifinals of the competition, beating the likes of Eagles Cement on their way up.

In 2012, Prime FC, a Nigeria National League side (2nd tier), played up to the semifinal of the competition, even winning the bronze medal.

Before then, Eagles Cement as a 2nd division side made their way to the semifinal in 1993, losing 5-1 to Plateau United but they picked up the pieces to win the trophy in 2001.

Alyufsalam Rocks of Ilorin, a non-league side created an upset beating Sharks FC 2-0 in the 1976 semifinal. They however lost 2-0 to Rangers International in the final.

However the biggest achievement by a rookie side was in 1984 when Leventis United playing in the 3rd division and with players like Edward Ansah, John Benson, Leotis Boateng, Mathew Onyeama and the likes beat NNB FC of Benin 2-1 in the semifinal and Abiola Babes in the final of the FA Cup.
