Sunshine Stars won’t stop Oboabona

Sunshine Stars will not stop Godfrey Oboabona from a move to Europe if the opportunity comes up.

Executive Director of the Ondo State Football Development Committee, OSFODEC, Mike Idoko told naijafootball247.com that they will encourage any favourable move that comes for Oboabona.

“OF course we are not going to stand in his way. If an offer comes that is good for him and the club, why not? That is why we are in this business so if a chance comes for a better offer, why should we stop his progress?

Oboabona played all six games for Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON 2013 and was rock solid in the Super Eagles’ defence leading pundits to say he may have played his last game as a Nigerian league player.

Idoko agrees and says they have already started grooming a replacement for the center back.

“We will be fooling ourselves if we insist that he will be our player for much longer. I have received so many offers that I have even lost count. He will certainly leave and that is why we have already started grooming a replacement for him so the team does not feel the loss too much,” Idoko said.

Oboabona joined Sunshine Stars straight from secondary school six years ago after having a full season with the academy run by OSFODEC.

Idoko reveals that there are a lot of other players the club has graduated from the academy who played in the first team last season.

“For the next season, we have thrown six players from the academy into the mix. That is how we develop talent here.

“Don’t forget that the Super Eagles central defence was a Sunshine Stars thing as Kenneth Omeruo was also a Sunshine Stars player before he left for Europe,” Idoko said.

Born in Ondo Town to Edo parents, Oboabona has played all of his football in Akure.
He has already played 18 times for the Nigerian national team.
