John Obuh off the hook at Sharks

Nigeria’s U20 team coach, John Obuh has been declared not guilty as regards the recent suspension of players and coaches at Nigeria Premier League side, Sharks.

Last week, in a press briefing at the conference room of the Rivers State Sports Ministry, the Permanent Secretary, Paulinus Nwankwoala announced that about fifteen players at Sharks and all coaches (including John Obuh) had been suspended indefinitely for what he called “selling out” in a league game Sharks lost 3-2 at home to Wikki Tourists.

However, two days later, the state sports commissioner, Fred Igwe (In pic)told naijafootball247.com that John Obuh has not been suspended for any reason whatsoever.

“The fact that Obuh was even in Port Harcourt for the match was because I pleaded with him to come and sort out the team.

“I noticed that it has been anytime Obuh is not with the team that the players resort to going on strike and other such activities and that is why I called Obuh and pleaded with him to come to Port Harcourt and try to instill discipline in the team,” Igwe said.

On the issue of match fixing or selling out, the commissioner also insisted that the players and coaches were not suspended as a result of match fixing or sell out but for indiscipline and anti-club activities.

“When players decide not to train anymore before a crucial league game then they have already sold out. It is not only when you collect money from someone that you have sold out. So that is what the players did.

“WE also sent a senior official of the ministry to placate them and they walked out on him. So you can define the term “sell out” the way you want but for us we saw them as very undisciplined and we had to take action,” Igwe said.

The ministry appointed Ere Dokubo as interim coach of Sharks and he went on to a good start beating Ocean Boys 2-0 in a rescheduled league game on Saturday
