Falcons roll over Zimbabwe

Nigeria’s Women national team, the Super Falcons have made a good start in their bid to qualify for the next Africa Women Championships with a 2-0 win over Zimbabwe in Harare on Sunday.

Defender Evelyn Nwabuoku put Nigeria ahead in the 13th minute with a ferocious shot from outside the box.

Stella Mbachu (In pic) made it 2-0 in the 80th minute after she was played through on goal by Gloria Iroka.

Coach of the side, Kadiri Ikhana, in his first official match in charge of the Falcons, expressed relief at the result but believes the team can perform better than they did on the field of play.

“I am satisfied with the result but I believe that we didn’t play as good as we can. However, we came here for the result and we got that with a clean sheet, so I am happy.”

The Mighty Warriors of Zimbabwe made clear their intentions to take something from the match but failed to convert their chances, especially in the first half.

Coach Rosemary Mugadza of Zimbabwe rued the chances missed by the Mighty Warriors but believes the team can turn things around in Nigeria.

“When strikers don’t convert goals, the team is bound to lose and that is exactly what happened today,” she said.

She went on to add: “Football is a crazy game and with the right attitude and belief that we can take the result in Nigeria, we will definitely turn the table.”

The second leg will be played in Nigeria on June 16, 2012.
