NFF blasts ‘scam’ report on Flying Eagles

The Nigeria Football Federation stated yesterday that it was utterly disappointed by a report in some newspapers, insinuating there was a ‘scam’ about the residential camping of the U-20 National Team, Flying Eagles in Port Harcourt last month.

“The ‘scammers’ are the ones who know what they are talking about”, said NFF General Secretary, Barrister Musa Amadu. #

“It also follows in the pattern of a smear campaign on-going by a section of the media and which we know is sponsored by some disgruntled and despicable characters.

“The Flying Eagles camped in Port Harcourt before their triumph at the African Youth Championship in South Africa, and that camping was bankrolled by the Rivers State Government, for which we are very grateful.

“However, the second camping in the same city which took place in the month of June was entirely bankrolled by the Nigeria Football Federation.

"The reporters apparently thought it was sponsored by Rivers State Government and went to town to try and rake some mud as is their usual practice.

“The only disgreement we had with the hotel (Somitel Hotel) was the 10 per cent service charge they added to the bill. We sent a staff working in the audit department to Port Harcourt to verify the details and he came back to recommend that we should not pay the amount because the players and technical crew were taking their meals in the restaurant, and not in their rooms.

“We communicated our feelings to the hotel and on 6th July, the hotel sent another bill including only five per cent tax, which was confirmed to be their normal charge to guests. We are in the process of paying this money, which amounts to only N574,594.50. There is no ‘scam’ at all about the camping programme.

“This falsehood has come at a time the U-20 National Team is preparing for its first match at the FIFA U-20 World Cup simply to try and distract us. It has failed woefully," said Amadu.
