Nigeria through to AYC final

Nigeria’s Flying Eagles will now play the final of the Africa Youth Championship after beating Mali 2-0 on Thursday in South Africa.

Uche Nwofor scored in the 22nd minute, his third of the tournament while Stanley Okoro made it two when he converted a penalty in the 88th minute after Kayode Olarenwaju was brought down in the box.

By getting to the semi finals, Nigeria’s U20 football national team was already assured of a place at the World Youth Championships and will now await the winner of the second semi final between Egypt and Cameroon to know who they play in the final.

Meanwhile, head coach of the Flying Eagles says Nigeria’s World Youth Championships group is neither easy nor difficult.

“I wouldn’t say this is a tough or easy group.

“These days, I don’t put a lot of importance on what group I find myself. This was after the Under-17 World Cup, where we were suppose to be in the ‘Group of Death’. Also at the AYC, it was another so-called ‘Group of Death’ that had Ghana and Cameroon.

“The best approach therefore is to face any team you come across in any competition.

“We still need to be focussed on our group for the World Cup, put in all we have got so as to go beyond this stage of the competition.”
