Siasia appoints media assistants

IN his bid to create a good working relationship with Nigerian journalists, Super Eagles’ coach, Samson Siasia, has appointed two Abuja-based sports journalists, Callistus Ebare of Africa Independent television (AIT) and Segun Ogunjimi as media assistants.

This is the first time an indigenous coach heading the Super Eagles team will take such initiative. From the days of coach Adegboye Onigbinde to Shaibu Amodu, the relationship between the players and Nigerian journalists had not been cordial, a situation that led to bad blood, especially during major competitions.

Most often, the players were hostile to the indigenous journalists, preferring instead to deal with foreigners. Not even the decision by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to appoint a South Africa-based sports analyst, Peterside Idah, as media officer to the Super Eagles under Amodu’s tenure could change the situation.

This time, Siasia in his wisdom decided to pick two people familiar with the terrain. Speaking with The Guardian yesterday, Ebare described Siasia as a man with good vision, adding that he would do everything within his limits to justify his appointment as media assistant to Siasia. He promised to bring his years of experience to bear in dealing with his professional colleagues whenever the need arises.

Siasia’s appointment as Super Eagles’ coach late last year received applause from millions of Nigerians, who believe that his coming would bring a great turnaround for the team.

Siasia will do his first major assignment tomorrow when he leads the Eagles against Sierra Leone in an international friendly match at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos. The match will give him an insight into the areas to work on in the team in the build-up to the Libya 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.
