Sharks, Dolphins get compromise deal

Sharks coach, Imama Amapakabor

The Rivers State sports commissioner, Boma Iyaye has proposed a compromise deal to players of Sharks and Dolphins who have refused to train since Monday as they protest unpaid wages.

In a meeting held with captains of the two sides, Emah Godwin (Dolphins) and Odinga Odinga (Sharks); both secretaries Ahmed Abdulrahman (Dolphins) and Cyril Dum Wite (Sharks); both managers, Stanley Eguma (Dolphins) and John Obuh (Sharks) as well accountants of both clubs, the commissioner proposed his payment plan to them.

He said he will pay one month salary as well as all four match bonuses owed by Friday morning in cash and then three months salaries by Monday, if only they agree to return to training and play their League game this weekend.

He further said the 60% sign on fees owed from last season will be paid by January 20, 2011but the captains, gathered did not give a definite yes to the agreement.

The sports commissioner would have to meet with all 70 players registered by both Sharks and Dolphins to put up the proposal to them.

"The commissioner will meet with us later today (Wednesday) so we can all agree because the captains do not have the right to decide for us," a Sharks player told

"We were already on our way to the government house to make a protest but we were asked to turn back because of the on going negotiations but we will now decide when the commissioner meets with us later in the day.

"We also have a fear that they just want to decieve us into calling off our strike and playing this weekend's games because there is no guarantee that we will get the money next week," the player said.

As a reminder, both clubs are owed 60% of sign on fees for last season, all 100% of sign on fees for the current season, 4 months salaries and four match bonuses.
