Rivers governor, Amaechi now Sharks fan

Rivers State governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi has declared that he is now a fan of Sharks FC, one of the clubs his government sponsor.

Ameachi had declared in Abuja during a public function sometime last year that he is “Arsenal for life” leading to public criticism but on Tuesday his stance changed with Sharks winning the West Africa Football Union, WAFU Cup.

During the reception organised for Sharks FC after winning the WAFU Cup, Amaechi said Sharks delivered their fans from humiliation as they were not able to win a trophy after 38 years as a club.

“At the start of the season I said I will be a Sharks fan if they win this trophy and for winning the Cup I want to declare that I am now a Sharks fan,” the governor said.

He added that he used to watch Sharks as a kid growing up in Port Harcourt and was also frustrated that the club could not win.

“I remember watching the likes of Richard Owubokiri, Hamilton Green and Benji Nzeakor play for Sharks back in those days and even though the club played very good football, they never won a trophy but we are all celebrating now because they are victors,” Amaechi said.

He said he will continue to reward excellence and announced gifts of brand new cars for 22 players of the club as well as five hundred thousand naira (about $3,500) each while officials or the club would also get one million naira (about $7,000) each.

He said the cars and cash gifts would be ready from the 2nd week of January 2011.
