Why EFCC detained NPL boss, Davidson Owumi

NPL Boss, Davidson Owumi

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC on Wednesday morning claimed it had arrested the chairman of the Nigeria Premier League, David Owumi but a different picture is being painted from the League body.

Public Relations Officer of the EFCC, Femi Babafemi told naijafootball247.blogspot.com that Owumi was arrested for, “fraud and award of fictitious contracts.”

“I can confirm that he has been arrested and it is for cases of fraud and award of fictitious contract,” Babafemi said.

When asked if Owumi committed the said fraud as chairman of Premier League side, Rangers International or as a member of the former NPL board headed by Oyuiki Obaseki, Babafemi said both.

“It cuts across board but more of Rangers because the case is being handled by our Enugu office.”

However, a call put in to Davidson Owumi was answered by Isaac Ibhafidon who is a staff of the NPL.

“The EFCC invited Owumi for routine questioning after a petition was written to them against him,” Ibhafidon said.

“He went there and spent about forty five minute before they let him go. Right now is in a board meeting in Abuja and it is not like it has been blown out of proportion by the sporting press.”

There are assurances that whatever is happening now will not affect the kick off of the 2010/11 Nigeria Premier League season scheduled for Saturday, October 23.
