How UEFA Champions League match claimed 3 Nigerian Lives

Tuesday, 19th October 2010 will be a day to be remembered for inhabitants of K-Dere and B-Dere communities in the Ogoni speaking area of Rivers State as three lives were reportedly lost in the aftermath of a violent clash.

The trouble started on the night of October 19 when a young unidentified man went to watch a UEFA Champions’ League match involving Arsenal and Shaktar Donetsk at a public viewing center only to get their to see that the place had just one television set and they were showing the game between Real Madrid and AC Milan.

He requested that they switch to the Arsenal match but he was shouted down and the argument led to a fight in which he was beaten up by other viewers who apparently were more interested in watching the game involving Real Madrid.

The young man then ran home to his community and cried out that he had been beaten up by youth from the other community and without knowing the details, they mobilized and went to unleash mayhem, a clash that reportedly claimed 3 lives even though the official government records claim just one life was lost.

Last Sunday at the St Paul’s Anglican church in Diobu Port Harcourt where Rivers State governor, Rotimi Ameachi held a thanksgiving service marking his third year in office he expressed sadness at the incident.

“The incident at K-Dere and B-Dere is a sad one and we will soon be setting up a judicial panel of inquiry to thoroughly investigate what happened in those communities and submit their report soonest.” Ameachi said.

The Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Dr. Rita Inoma Abbey could not speak on the matter as she told naijafootball247.blogspot.com that she had just been transferred to Abuja and was clearing up her desk.

As more details of this sad incident unfold we shall report it as usual.
