FIFA ban: NFF to decide on Tuesday

Sports minister, Isa Bio
Media officer of the Nigeria Football Federation, Robinson Okosun says the management of the Federation will sit on Tuesday to decide what to do about the recent FIFA suspension.

The world football organising body, FIFA on Monday wrote to the Nigeria Football Federation suspending them from all football activities with immediate effect because of what they referred to as government interference in football matters.

FIFA cited amongst others the recent decision of the sports minister, Isa Bio to suspend relegation from the Nigeria Premier League, court action against elected NFF board and the removal of the Acting Secretary General, Musa Amadu amongst other things.

The media officer however told naijafootball247 that they are still studying the letter and will not be able to speak on it until late on Tuesday.

“You know we received the letter late today (Monday) so we cannot say much officially,” Okosun said.

“We will meet tomorrow (Tuesday) and decide what to do and them come up with a position so for now I cannot tell you its implications on Nigerian football or what we will do, either to appeal or whatever but after tomorrow’s meeting I will be in a better position to talk with you.”

Suspension of the Nigeria Football Federation

The FIFA Emergency Committee decided today, 4 October 2010, to suspend the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) with immediate effect on account of government interference.

This decision follows the latest events linked to the NFF, such as the court actions against elected members of the NFF Executive Committee preventing them from exercising their functions and duties, the stepping down of the acting NFF General Secretary on the instructions of the National Sports Commission, the decision of the Minister of Sports to have the Nigerian League start without relegation from the previous season, and the fact that the NFF Executive Committee cannot work properly due to this interference.

The suspension will be maintained until the court actions have ceased and the duly elected NFF Executive Committee is able to work without any interference.

During the period of suspension, the NFF will not be able to be represented in any regional, continental or international competitions, including at club level, and also not in friendly matches. In addition, neither the NFF nor any of its members or officials can benefit from any development programme, course, or training from FIFA or CAF while the federation remains suspended.
