Nigerian league now October 23, new fixtures soon

Bayelsa United players celebrate a league goal

Following the decision of Nigeria’s sports minister, Isa Bio that no club be relegated for the last football season, the Nigeria Premier League, NPL will no longer kick off on October 2, 2010 as scheduled.

The NPL now says the League will kick off on October 23 amongst 24 clubs as against 20 that used to be the norm in Nigerian football.

“We have to redo the fixtures and again four clubs that were previously relegated, Ranchers Bees, Bayelsa United, Gateway and Wikki Tourists are returning to the Premier League on such short notice so the 2nd October date can no longer be feasible,” a source at the NPL secretariat told naijafootball247.

“There is also the other matter of registration by the clubs and all these cannot be done in four days.”

Already promoted clubs, Bukola Babes, Crown, Plateau United and JUTH will also keep their Premier League status.

It is not yet clear what format the league will be run as there has not yet been any official statement from the NPL on that.

Some speculations say Nigeria may have and abridged league of two groups while another school of thought say games may be played weekend and mid week all through the season.
