Glo want to continue League sponsorship

Telecommunications giants, Globacom look to grab the sponsorship rights for the Nigeria Premier League for the third successive term but it seems the NPL may play hard to get this time.

Towards the end of the last football season and the end of their second three year sponsorship term, the company expressed their displeasure at the leverage they have received from sponsoring the league since 2003 and all entreaties by the Davidson Owumi led NPL board to get them back to sponsoring the league failed.

Last week the Group Chief Operating Officer, Mohammed Jameel had told the press in Lagos that they still believe they can do more to help the Nigerian League after already investing more than two billion naira (about $13m).

“In the last seven years, Globacom has through investments in various sectors of Nigerian football demonstrated the capacity to feed the passion of Nigerians for the game of football. Some of these include our direct investment of over N2billion in the Glo Premier League as rights fee.

“Today, while we still believe that more can be done to raise the game to greater heights; we are currently engaged in holding talks with the new NPL Board to fashion out ways to make the league deliver value to all stakeholders. In no distant time, the fruits of this dialogue will be made public,” Jameel enthused.

However, naijafootball247 can exclusively reveal that Globacom will not regain the hosting rights of the league easily if reports from the NPL mean anything.

Our source at the NPL reveals, again, under the condition of anonymity that they are not discussing with Globacom and the telecommunications giants may not be announced as title sponsors of the league.

“We held discussions with them some months ago but they played hardball with us. If they say they are discussion with the NPL, I do not know about that, but I am not sure they will be announced as sponsors when the league starts,” our source said.

Three years ago, Globacom fought off a stiff challenge from MTN to grab the League sponsorship rights.
