Volunteers set to work in Abuja

Work has started at full pace for everyone involved at the Abuja Sub –seat of the Local Organizing Committee of the FIFA U-17 World Cup Nigeria 2009.



Chairman of the Abuja Sub –seat, Chief Taiwo Ogunjobi addressed the 300 volunteers who will work on various aspects of the hosting in the city on Wednesday, saying that they should see this as a veritable opportunity to serve their fatherland.



“We are very happy that you are excited to come out and work as volunteers, to help deliver a successful FIFA U-17 World Cup championship. Our charge is that you should all continue to show similar zeal, dedication and commitment even in the face of provocation, as you are bound to come against during the tournament.



“I must remind you that Abuja is the major venue for this competition, and all other Sub –seats will be looking up to us. Abuja will host the opening and closing ceremonies, and the first two matches involving Nigeria. We must be decent, responsible, and exemplary in the way we work and the way we carry ourselves.



“You will be attending to different people from different cultures, background and orientation, and it is important that you put on a smile all the time”, said Ogunjobi.



Officials of world football –governing body, FIFA yesterday evening did a test –run of the facilities at the National Stadium Complex, Abuja ahead of Saturday’s opening ceremony at the venue.



Also, with all the four teams contesting in Group A having come into town, the training pitches are already busy. Honduras team trained at the practice pitch of the National Stadium Wednesday morning, while the referees and assistant referees made use of the mainbowl for physical training. The Nigeria team, Cup holders, trained at the Old Parade Ground.
