Nigeria 09: Labour crisis may disrupt World Cup

The planned nation wide protest by the Nigeria Labour Union, NLC may disrupt the FIFA U-17 World Cup to be hosted by the country.

The Group Executive Director in charge of Commercial and Investments of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Aminu Baba Kusa, had said government was bent on deregulating the domestic fuel market by November 1, 2009.

As a result of this Nigeria’s Labour Congress issued a statement through its Secretary General, John Ogah warning that Labour would stage nation wide protests that will end in Abuja on October 29, 2009, barely five days after the opening match of the World Cup in Abuja.

There are already long queues at petrol stations around Nigeria as marketers hoard their products in preparation for the planned deregulation.

The World Cup holds in Nigeria between October 24 to November 15, 2009.
