Amaechi laments dearth of quality players in Eagles’ team

Rivers State governor and chairman, presidential task force on Super Eagles’ qualification to the 2010 World Cup, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi says the present national team lacks quality players.

Amaechi said this has led to the not too impressive outing of the Eagles in the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign.

“The way it is now qualification is no longer in our hands. It is between God and the Tunisians,” Amaechi said.

“Even if we win in Kenya, as long as the Tunisians do not lose in Mozambique we will not qualify.”

Governor Amaechi said he did every thing possible to ensure the Eagles were comfortable enough to qualify for the World Cup.

“We went to Europe to meet with them and when they told us their problems we tried to solve them,” the governor said.

“For example we increased their match bonuses to ten thousand dollars per player from the previous five thousand and the coaches now get twenty thousand dollars from ten that it used to be but I now agree that the lack of quality players in the team is our bane and we must seek grass root development if football must improve in Nigeria.”
